Tất Táng / The Mourning Final

TẤT TÁNG / THE MOURNING FINAL
Independent Publication
By Han Hai Man (Nhu Nguyen)

"Tất Táng - The end of my memorable life" is a independent project that explores how funerals are conducted in Vietnam. Tất Táng is a combination of the words "chu tất" (thorough and careful) and "mai táng" (a mourning). That means we take care of the last moments of a person's life meticulously and thoroughly.

The author, who has experienced her parents' funerals twice, has documented her observations in the form of a notebook or personal diary. Her put a lot of thought into choosing the topic since it is quite sensitive and the target audience is picky. Funerals are often viewed negatively and as a dark topic that people tend to avoid discussing, making it challenging to address.

Through this project, she aims to share the information and meaning of the rituals she has personally witnessed and experienced during a time of confusion.

"Khi tôi đi, tôi ước tôi nhìn thấy thiên đường,
Và người tôi nhớ thương, cũng nhìn thấy tôi."
About concept

The author envisioned Tất Táng as a repository of various papers that contain a wealth of information about their parents' funeral. The purpose is to preserve these memories for future generations. As a result, Tất Táng uses different paper materials for printing, and handwritten fonts are used throughout the project to reflect the note-taking characteristic of notebooks.

The author incorporates textures from Vietnamese votive papers and colors from five-colored flags, which are familiar items that often appear in Buddhist funerals in Vietnam. This combination not only preserves the spiritual culture but also adds brightness,  freshness and optimism to the project, replacing the somber feeling often associated with funerals.

Even though extensive research has been conducted, a significant portion of the project's information is based on personal experience. As a result, the author cannot guarantee the absolute accuracy of all the information provided. Therefore, please evaluate the project solely from a graphic design perspective.

Sincerely thanks!

ABOUT PUBLICATION CONTENT
TẤT TÁNG AROUND SAIGON

Tất Táng is more than just a graphic design project - it's a heartfelt message to the audience. It reminds us that every moment in life is special and worth cherishing, even in death. A funeral is a way to bid farewell to those who have passed away, but our love and care for them never fades away. We will continue to take care of them until their very last moments.

Tất Táng was created with the intention of providing a more optimistic and brighter perspective on the death, particularly for younger generations who may shy away from discussions about funerals.

Additionally, the author would like to express their condolences to those who have suffered loss, as a way of honoring and remembering our loved ones.
